Windows of Peace Mural Dedication
Saturday, May 21, 2016
3-5 p.m.
Join in the festivities as we celebrate the culmination of our sequel project to the 2004 collaboration that brought together Al-Aqsa Islamic Society, ArtWell and the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts to create the Doorways to Peace mural.
Now, more than 10 years later, our three organizations have reunited with original school partners John Moffet Elementary and La Salle Academy to engage again by refurbishing the original work and creating new work to grace the walls of Al-Aqsa, led by artist Parris Stancell and through poetry and tile-making workshops led by Joe Brenman, Cathy Cohen and ArtWell teaching artists.
Help us celebrate what many hands and hearts have worked to create across our vibrant neighborhood and city! There will be free refreshments, activity tables, henna and more!
The event will be held rain or shine! If it rains we will move the ceremony and activities to the basement area.
The Interfaith’s Center’s of Religious Leaders Council will be recognizing Al Aqsa Islamic Society as a Zone of Peace.
“The Steering Committee is impressed with your exemplary efforts to address the root causes of violence and create peace within your programs, and with those beyond: in your neighborhood, throughout the city, and wherever your influence can reach.”
They will present us with a banner on May 21st, and will be part of our program immediately after the Mural Arts Dedication Ceremony.
Ramadan Mubarak! The blessed month of Ramadan is coming upon us soon and projected to start on June 6th or June 7th depending on the lunar siting. Taraweeh (Nite) prayers will take place each evening immediately after Isha Prayers.
